Licence to permit disturbance of Wild Birds at the Nest for thepurposes of photography

Photographers should be aware that in Northern Ireland it is an offence to disturb all wild birds at or near the nest. Therefore photographers intending to carry out nest photography should obtain a licence from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). Photographers are advised to consult NIEA’s Code of Wildlife Photography. The code may be downloaded as a PDF file from:

Photographers are advised to check the legislation in other countries they are intending to visit.

Also disturbance of wildlife in the many Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs), which exist in Northern Ireland, may be an offence.

You can enquire about these matters from the Wildlife Inspectorate at NIEA at 028 9056 9516

Thanks to Tim Ennis for contributing the above.
